The Inspired Woman Scholarship
August 18, 2019
By : Marci Narum

This fund began in 2017 with gifts from readers of Inspired Woman magazine and contributions from Inspired Woman Enterprises, LLP. Inspired Woman magazine contributed to the fund, held a fundraiser, and invited readers to help build the fund through subscription options.

Management of the fund was transferred to the North Dakota Community Foundation (NDCF) in August 2018. The intent is to continue growing the fund and supporting future journalism students.

The purpose of the fund is to assist students with their higher education expenses. $500 or more will be awarded to students pursuing careers in print, broadcast, online, and visual journalism. Second year college undergraduates through graduates with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible. Applications are accepted January 1 – April 1 at ndcf.net.

Preference is given to students who exhibit leadership, steadfast work ethic, desire and willingness to learn and grow personally and professionally, creativity in writing, journalistic integrity, and involvement with journalism activities that are collegiate, or community based.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Students pursuing careers in print, broadcast, online, and visual journalism
  • Second year college undergraduate through graduate students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible
  • 350-word essay on a topic of the applicant’s choice
  • Letters of recommendation from three resources familiar with the applicant’s talent and character. These resources may be teachers and professors, current or former employers, clergy members, coaches, school counselors and advisors, or leaders of organizations the student is associated with. The letters should not be written by family members, friends, or spouses/partners.

The idea for starting the fund was inspired during a conversation with members of the Inspired Woman advisory board while brainstorming ways to give back to the community. The Inspired Woman Scholarship fits the mission of the magazine perfectly: to celebrate, encourage, empower, educate, entertain, and connect women. The scholarship is not exclusively for women, however. Men are encouraged to apply.

Inspired Woman has a committee of journalism professionals who review the applications, determine the finalists, and choose the scholarship recipients.

Donations to the Inspired Woman Scholarship fund are tax-deductible and can be made online at www.ndcf.net or mail a check to:  NDCF, PO Box 387, 711 Riverwood Dr, Suite 2, Bismarck, ND 58502-0387

You will receive a receipt from NDCF for your donation.
